A field guide to the faint things
An independent guide to what each class of deep-sky object actually is, and to the catalogues that organise them.
Every entry here answers the same three questions in the same order: what the object is, how far off it lies, and what it looks like through glass rather than in a photograph. That last one matters more than it sounds. Almost everything on this site is grey at the eyepiece, and knowing that in advance is the difference between disappointment and a long observing life.
What is not here
No equipment recommendations, no models, no prices, no best-of lists, no buying advice of any kind. No memberships, no events, no astrology, and nothing involving the sun. Where a figure is disputed — and distances to these objects are disputed more often than the round numbers suggest — the entry says so rather than picking a side quietly.
The photographs
Photographs are used throughout because they show structure the eye cannot resolve. They are not a promise. A caption on this site tries to say the thing the picture cannot.
